Beer and wine that goes with some of those recipes that's at two to three it's free free sample -- 0313. Beer. Recruited Johnson scored and two victory with yours truly. Up first is doctor Richard Baxter doctor Baxter has a new book out called -- gets better with wine. New science for a healthier better and longer life that is the second edition dot Baxter is they -- a little plastic surgeon in the Seattle area. Interested in topic of one minute anti aging for many years and he's lectured extensively on that topic is medical director for healthy aging magazine for physicians. And he's published research on her pro all that cool. By product of drinking at one and the anti aging priorities of 1 -- Baxter good morning and welcome to the that are going to be here thanks how's the weather out in Seattle.

We -- having a very mild morning here it's it's been kind of an interest in summer with. -- extremes of weather.

I was there two weeks ago. Just -- hum but -- I love wine. And yes there are times when. My moderation is a little heavier than two glasses tonight. But I still enjoy a glass of red line is or any kind of -- like a lot of my listeners and it's always good to. Here's somebody professed that it's not just a fun and come viable beverage to enjoy it with food in trends. But there are some health benefits you've been a part of this for a long time. Tell us a little about yourself and how -- plastic surgeon. Got involved in health and one.

Aaron plastic surgery we do a lot of what we call anti aging or doing procedures to help people look younger and you know you do that for awhile is start to get more and more interest and an agent process itself. So wherever you start to do a comprehensive review of that subject. And be a really objective about it you always end up with this story about that client and the interest and compound can guidelines. You know they need these sub title on the book itself you're better and longer life and we know that people who drank red lion on a regular basis are healthier particularly as they get older. They have a higher quality of life and the live about five years longer on average of -- there's a lot of interest and stuff going on there.

This the whole idea you know probably got. God took sail back in the early ninety's -- sixty minutes did. The French paradox and you and I both know that that was just a glimpse of some of the research is gone on but it really did. Kind of fire up the public about drinking red wine you know you and our speaking earlier when I was in the retail business with -- retriever one and spirits. Little old ladies were coming in red after the shows an okay what got to remind committed during canola and at the drink anything now nope never drag and drop them alive than. Interesting how that all kind of got so much Preston but -- study of wine and health benefits goes pretty far back and.

Well it does you know be these the other aspect of a French paradox -- where it was senate magistrates. Awareness in the public but also stimulated a lot of research. And and so we know for example that. It isn't just a heartfelt story which the French. Focused on -- so it's a broad range of things that. Really the wind and health story girl's best islamists. On the civilization. People. First started living -- one place. And you know going to the -- one place the water supplies became. An issue and because once in natural antiseptic I think it's really one of events that made civilization possible. All the great seafaring Arab origin exploration. -- have more climb on board -- water because the -- was necessary waters.

You know.

And the story all the way through. You know if you have a -- advocate told earlier of highlighted so many quotes and and topical issues in your book. In the early section. Class Albert literature refers to one is connector which is thought to have derived from the word meaning to escape deaths here at. -- Interesting stuff I'm. Going back further you know we are our young civilization young is it maybe. Here in the US that there was you know the prohibition issue and all that stuff there was even sometimes when. Some science in this country was developed and and and proffered the idea that there were health benefits. And that was kind of squashed a -- but --

Well yeah that's interesting how we -- could talk for a long time about prohibition and -- what led up to I think the upshot was that if it turned out to have a I've met. Detriment to the public health. And and so we accept this kind of conflicting view of drinking. Ever since then. The biggest study that it has a lot of people are familiar with about heart health and and lifestyle factors. Affecting health is called the Framingham study. That was started in 1948 in the town of Framingham Massachusetts and basically they just. And rolled everybody in the town and and -- their help over the years and and determined. What the factors were that influences -- so for example you know breakfast in an important. You know the -- for help this is summit -- account when they looked at the role of alcohol consumption. After the -- been going for about 25 years. Nobody was really expecting that it was going to be found to be beneficial but that isn't -- Akron what they found people who drink in moderation. And significantly lower rates of heart disease and of fear. The interesting thing is that the these study data was actually suppressed by the study's sponsors at the National Institutes of Health at that time. In fact they've they've requested that they had a different message be put out because they're afraid of encouraging people to drink.

You know we we can understand that certainly back in the context of those days. And and even today -- would be. Picture two to guess but is it really is an interesting topic that's close we should spend. A little time talking about. The chemical properties of won it and what is it that rarely makes. The potential for enhancing longevity. And -- all wines admitted to it when we look for how do we know that we user 11 better than others. I know that the Finger -- happens to have. Red one with the highest natural Rivera -- and -- what -- some of the things we should look at.

Well I think before we get into. All the interest in things that are unique about red line we've really should. Up for just a little bit about the role of alcohol itself because you know one of the questions -- That you inevitably come to his or can we district grape juice -- reckoned with -- You know. And it turns out there is some benefit to alcohol itself it improves. The high density so low density cholesterol ratio in the blood. It it it has other specific things that are beneficial in right now. We have to kind of start from that and then what's unique about red line is these molecules called or panels on the other people are familiar with fiscal spiritual. They come from the skin of the grape and they come from. Stressed -- so wine grapes are grown in a specific way to really encourage that development of these you know citizenship. If all the structure to the wind that. -- So you have to you have to grow the grapes from a specific way the -- that go into -- different from the -- into Jews. They have higher levels of these beacon where. And then when you crush the whole -- and fermented together as the alcohol develops and helps extract these things into the solution. Hawaiian is is very different and great Jews. And that is always you know molecules. And there's there's a whole range of Amber's her fault is it is -- one. The properties and I think most people. It is there are very potent anti -- much much more powerful than vitamin. People using on the.

And you know you touched on something in your right I'm glad that you backed up and and brought up the fact that. That's a combination of things it's not just the policy goals and one but it is the alcohol in the whole package in and when folks you know -- Right here in east is Wichita at Sam's Club you can buy Richard trawl tablets you -- liquid is it. Great extract with the pirates fair -- content. But it's just the supplement it's not the package.

Britain and you know and I think for people who. Who don't drink or can't drink or. In -- may have to practicing neurosurgeon matter there Japan's and I just can't have alcohol also. It's nice to have each other options. Don't think it's accurate it is. All of the credit or wind -- to to just choose one or two.

We let's take a break we'll come back we'll talk more about that the above the vitamin -- is -- of vitamin will talk more about that and some of the health benefits that you find if you read. -- gets better with one had the book on the rogue bill this week could hardly put it down. Welcome back to the to let you know you're looking for some fun to do this Saturday night or any weekend. At her for house and -- York. Destination for Sunday brunch Sunday -- goes every Sunday from eleven to -- at 2:30 PM. 1495. For adults and 695 for the young man's. What a great deal what a beautiful setting her products that they're. I'm on the phone with me is doctor Richard Baxter the book were speaking about his. Page gets better with one it's a -- actress second edition. And I were talking about you know vitamins and supplements and you know you can buy reliever color liquid former. Grape juice fortified with -- And vitamins and all manner but it's a lot of studies have been out lately that you like taking multi vitamins might even be. When we put that -- the fallacy of if one multi vitamin is good six might be better. And can be bad for you in fact the reality the reality of it is if you can get your nutrients. From the real thing from moderate eating and and and beverages he probably better off.

Yeah and special interest campaign about. I don't understand there are. A lot of very large scale studies. Reported in recent years and and what they. All -- does that. There's no real benefits in terms. Longevity or reducing the risk of these diseases that. How much agent. It surprised a lot of -- on the other hand has a lot of evidence to support. Hughes and there's some pretty good science and that might be.

And speaking of the science you you're not only went back to some really old studies but you're certainly integrated. Many of the studies that happened in the last two decades and and there's so many different ways to do studies and we all know a bit to this statistics can be skewed. You eliminated a lot of that by that the different types of studies that use the -- incorporated into the facts he put the book and I think that's really important they all seem to point to the same kind of a conclusion.

Well that's -- I think you know it's it's. It's good to be fairly skeptical about these things you know don't don't waste a lot of faith and any one particular study but it just start to see a pattern from different types of studies -- done. -- look at populations. And trials and laboratory science someone you know kind of convergence over same story. And then you have something that just sort.

of the quote you just a minute but at the little sidebar it is one of vitamin. Way to look at it to look at it is like oil car's engine a certain amount required to report to run smoothly. Too little in the agency's up too much and -- the system likewise a little wine helps grease the meta -- ballot machinery. And the spirit. And too much got the worker yes indeed we know that be true I'm. I wonder if I don't wanna leave anything out about the compounds but you know Rivera Charles the key alcohol in conjunction. And then you know for -- doc I feel like the moderate consumption won a glass or two with dinner and with friends or before dinner with friends. Is relaxing and just in it brings out great conversation and laughter and it makes me feel more ago.

Yes that's their way to you know enjoy life. We talk about moderate drinking and the benefits are really are specific to a pattern of drinking. And that is and glass or two. Or three. Red wine with dinner. Something that has to be sort of a daily habit it's not it's not just a total amount that you can do on the weekend and ignored during the week it has to be -- early regular basis and right now and I think the way to and -- is to consider -- as a food packets -- of -- You look at it from a nutritional point of view you can actually make a pretty good case that.

And then. You know like I said there's going to be people ago so I don't drink -- but maybe I should start. Or there's those on the other extreme ago while of one -- and more is better that we are treated that. And you've got a good. A great section of the couple things written for to it about. Alcoholism in the statistics. And how. Who do we if you look at it it's a little bit -- one is good for you that's that's the positive side but then we have alcoholism and and you we know that people are gonna go to extremes but. And in -- some statistics about death rates and oh okay death rates caused by alcoholism. Versus. Those of us who are moderate consumers of wine. And how -- death rate would increase maybe -- or even exceed. The -- and.

That's you know people want to oversimplify hadn't considered as either drinking and applications that's very. A lot more complicated than that. If you look at all of the disease and disability that. That goes along with. Problem drink and you know and become more pretty impressed that may be if people shouldn't drink at all. Until you start looking at this little subset of drinkers. Focused primarily on -- And have it was meals and do it moderation and the benefit of that. It's a statistical basis so much stronger. Then then you get from problem drinkers no problems they have so. It's really not just comparing one to the other there's there's a specific subset of people that really get the benefit --

I love that the quote that dude it's a derivative from the forming their results and and and all the studies you looked at the we can now say with confidence that in the aggregate the overall overall risk of death from all causes. Is significantly lower and moderate drinker as compared troops trainers and heavy drinkers. And you know. The G-8. -- Pictures that show that the I think that it's an interesting concept and and we're -- it's not just heart health were speaking it's kind of overall decay.

Well that's what it is it's it's that turns out to be all of these things are or what we're called degenerative diseases that centered over agent charged. Alzheimer's disease and osteoporosis. It's cancer. It's heart disease it's all of those things together. Even -- scanned in and printers so it's it's it's just the whole range of things that is really fun when you start looking at it.

You know today the one nerve statistic but. The increase in heart disease and stroke. During prohibition. Now. Whip within our call was of forbidden and and obviously than -- hear any kind of consumption was done was on the QT -- a small percentage. But still thirty to 40% increase. Statistically. And heart disease and an and other complications stroke and things during prohibition. Yeah.

I mean and I think you know alcohol as part of that equation in there are other things are happening at society at that time that. It is certainly don't think that's how we can ignore.

And it's an. You know there with the whole topic we can probably talk for an hour about. What the French paradox kind of brought to -- the idea is it. The wind or is -- lifestyle is that. The -- the different stresses or lack thereof or the diet that goes with the consumption of one Ellison's kind of played into it. Not so much for intruded and maybe not even just one but -- Mediterranean lifestyle -- more than answer.

Right you know Mediterranean diet is really lifestyle and and the wind. Is one of the food cannot live south and the sat and -- and goes where it is. There's.

And interesting stuff. And I just can't put the book down and the further I get back at the more I learn the more than I thought I knew it now I get facts statistics and figures to look at -- And really good -- can you stay with us just for a little bit here -- net as -- back into the next section you bet. He was the lucky that's -- phone lines were smoke and on the new control work. Thanks Mike for help me get to all those calls. -- Dock when we left we you know we've kind of covered a broad brush strokes some of the basics. But you know I guess most folks would if they if we open the phone lines would askew what do what do dock when. What I like line I'm new to line up Bindra in line I don't drink wine. Let's talk about that aspect should you start if you haven't been. How much is enough to -- touch and that too through glasses a day for men may be a glass or two for women. And then about and certain ones in two white one -- of red one and accounts.

You know you know as we're talking about part of it is just a lifestyle that goes along with moderate drinking and so. You know any type of whining you enjoyed drink and there's probably going to be helpful. In that regard red line does have more of these anti oxidant always you know and so you could probably get the most benefit. There is supposed to other types of -- I think people should just explorer around a little bit you know I'm I'm the one that that it -- Oregon and just try to make it a habit of having grassland and certainly one of the most powerful and you can do statistical basis for you know.

Well you know and I think it is interesting is if you're thinking of red wanted to mention that wish there were some study uses them. Shortly after the French paradox of sixty minutes that. Talked about -- where do why inch produced have the most -- potential for antioxidants and funny that while the Finger Lakes is notorious for why one red wine is produced from their particular Concord grapes. -- priority indigenous to this country. Have a very very high content of -- And you'd.

I think generous very -- percent of the whole story it's it's there's you know a lot of very interest in science and a lot of commerce around right now but. You know I think it is it really comes down to just fine in the lineup tonight. -- You know you can really get into which areas produced the most hysterical and so forth but it's it's not quite as simple as just I'm in the right variety. And right place because it because it comes down to individual techniques -- make it's now. Of the greats sir are handled. It's very from one vineyard to connect with them to an area. So I think it's it's probably not worth while to spend a lot of effort really. Focusing on just leave the contents of a return call on the greatness and poignant like.

Isn't that deal the only way to -- goodness knows and then it -- And I think that if you just. For sure if you're not a drinker and use. -- you know for sure so Jim. 24 ounce -- down your neck every night and not with dinner or not for fun not with that come -- ballot either the dude friends and probably not gonna do is much storage it's. And stuff. Wind blows know who loves not wine women and song remains of schools his whole life long. I think you have put so many good quotes and Aaron and frank I think the little boxes of information again. You know you've got a biological properties of policy goals and just gives you an idea -- anti bacterial and then there's. I remember this when it came out there was a 2002 studies. That was kind of instituted by the about the rhino virus I think it was done in Spain Korea -- mean that's. That had this seemed to say that not only is an anti aging issues of the event accidents policy you know but. That it might even help slow the spread of flu viruses Kohl's government.

Right yeah -- there's pretty good. Evidence that people who drink. Specifically red line on a regular basis have lower incidences of colds and wanted to get -- it's -- less severe.

And then of course there's going to be -- is going it's just isn't bad. How many times stock have you been at lectures were. Someone wants to stand up and say you know you're you're pro offering demon alcohol you're you're supporting the idea that drinking is couldn't. In a -- the -- much grief for that.

Well I occasionally -- our worst start out by a variety of appraising a that it there's moderate drinking network talk -- specifics. -- can pattern and that people who have. Probably much alcohol. Really shouldn't current events.

And -- you you don't have to drink there are other sources of policy and -- And a lot of them we hear about certainly. Blueberries are like the magic troop.

They really are. And and dark chocolate.

The couple of the major food groups bloopers dark chocolate -- one. That. At the book is so good doc I am am am. You -- you got a little section there on tea and coffee and how they have -- some of the technology that can help with some of those same types of things and pretty much just comes down to. Injuring a martyr lifestyle that includes. So much great line. That. Second edition of the book is are going to be a third dig up another slant is there any news studies going on -- that we might look forward to in the next decade.

There are studies coming out almost every day it's just such a dynamic area of research right now on. So what I'm doing is trying to keep people up to date on my blog so immediate area didn't applaud for that. On the link to it on the web site age groups that are required dot com. And you know by the time -- Could put together a third edition it would probably.

To be so much more stuff but it ought to get into itself and I think you're you know. Need to get a good background could sort of foundation what the book and I'm -- updates on the web site.
