This is the good life. Food wine and all the good things of life now here's the host of the good life. Guide our.
Well this program out there have a great weekend my sound beaver lake in the northwest part of Arkansas. And I am having a great weekend. I think it's just a little of those food ones and find kind of weekends but had to take a break and come talk to you that we do every Saturday morning here on news radio thirteen thirty. It very -- the other 2% -- we -- we've been on at noon. I think that's a good morning again by the way it's gonna be hard habit to break after so many European and it. None attend but gradually disappear new -- thanks for hanging around Canada that if your old Serbs follow those who knew no one. Thank you very much. Don't forget you can find out about upcoming schedule issue and then -- gone by going to the blood got dot com and they're you can also look at. Video number one of the week every week probably put the video on associated with the line or one bigger -- on -- And then as like feature that one on the show operative that we chose so this -- below the -- the beautiful Napa Valley tavern today. And the video is not on yet but -- also to get home tomorrow. The foreign chock full upon first saw the doctor Rebecca McMahon. She's from the -- county extension up but we're gonna talk about tomato day which is next week that would report ever talk Padilla armed executive VP from the -- group about Jews that even. I'm good deed indeed. In the second half its Jeff -- from very with the new book. Each some very remixed a gallery of Kiki drinks we'll talk about from where we'll throw in the line of the week and then there are will be over de Angola. But just gonna talk of Iraq -- she is been busily putting together with the -- Talented staff one of the most fun event of the summer tomato day course timed perfectly next week when. Most of you were big -- have realized that we're about to hit full stride and right this is growing and read his shining -- good good afternoon. Almost equivalent and think for the -- that left of that. Okay so July 24 7 AM -- noon at the center -- makes -- and -- them up to 21 and ridge. It's the 21. Annual committed date anti implies that that. -- that I am. I like free admission and were talking about if you get there at seven you'll be busy haven't done. 7 AM to noon and there are so many things that you ought to pre planned -- not to repay about let's talk about religion or the demonstration stuff because I know that a lot of education to be dead if you take part admitted that next week.
Right so that they that they don't have an hour. -- part. L and they varying and then starting at 8 AM well how -- I. Every half hour to 45 minute demonstration garden ranging from compost scheme that you were the garden. And different gardening topics starting with kids all National Guard mean Ellen made those tomatoes can contain very. In game that we're kind of covering the range of guarding top.
Well making canning solved a cooking with tomatoes so that's going to be. Of course my dear friend Daniel Levin executive shuffle which talk publicly about Libya who.
Yeah I think I mean the deal a couple of different data appetizer and so. And they continued in the sunflower realm we got to make our cooking folks -- in the hot button you know they can pick their food inside instead.
Could come. There are some things they've built we're listening now that they've made no preparation public and still be a part of even that they didn't grow their own tomatoes talked about some of the competition like the salsa competition.
Right so we have freed well bring -- different contact. We have that's also a petition. You can either make -- welfare and bring it in and turn it down after pre register anything to show up. And that and certainly we take entry didn't call 9:30 in the morning 7936. Point. Or at Q hectic and yourself so you can bring a sample of your hand and that's about as well. Ask -- about but the pol but up and move.
About the photography contest that's something that most everybody in the Senate to be involved --
Exactly so we have our -- while I'm focusing on tomato photography. And it's a lot of finally you can has entry that your fourteen and under and then -- the category include -- although. And a category I would stick made -- as a kind of plant mister potato head and we're looking for something that created. Some sort of creative -- you in tomatoes. Other second category is the eclectic tomato. So do you know anything. Capturing the beauty of tomatoes and it may be more natural but. I would not affect I. In the third category is a little run for its and that's what -- that tomato growing up that. So we've seen a lot of people growing tomatoes with the topsy turvy containers or just other containers -- They need to do something different that they cannot let themselves. And so you can take that picture that back -- and turn part of our.
On. That's great and then. I think I know that there's a lot of people who have been anxiously awaiting for July 24 and then really good in the garden because of tomato growing card doesn't really a big part.
Right so we usually have between fifty and eighty entries that -- tomato contacts so. Competitive. Especially in our standard tomatoes now we have several categories I know that fund category is like -- tomato. And I don't remember what our largest tomato accident I think it nearly 2000 wow. Yeah and then we at -- country did hit some really ugly bit at a with a now of course you can that's within. Have regular tomatoes -- played really well let's say those they have speed cherry tomatoes. The latest -- Concert great tomatoes and also -- this here. We're having an air in this -- has so. It's a single specimen until one NATO -- well being having the proper category for Ireland.
Great and then you know what do you predict they did any of the contest. Or Purdue in the seminars. It's still the annual market and you can buy tomatoes they're no better time the next Saturday.
Exactly the market is definitely pulled tomatoes -- the slogan that helped me that they don't. But next week there will be tornadoes in everything it can training.
A group. Well it's it's huge amount abundant. I would -- going to be in towns like could be there but for not I will. Yeah on the road again the -- July 24 next Saturday. 7 AM to noon that the -- extension center at 21 religion. Rebecca what's the web site where folks -- give more information. -- little -- quiet about doing this subject on the expansion web site which is essentially that it is that EU. You go. Well good stuff I know it'll be a part of that Rebecca thanks so much for being part of a program today. They care have a great weekend and best of luck and -- the huge good fun next Saturday that the fourth with a little bit. But for -- it. You always messing up the door determined to let the talk about. Unthinkable. Extension office and that the great resource and that the matter would try to time the live on don't forget we're looking at the little would start you get anywhere and that is so many great things -- farmers market going on every Saturday or. It's appropriate that I would be talking about it and it is indeed on the get lives it has. I think that your program. But celebrated like that we've ran. -- Wine train is also go beyond that and that the beating a good life and life that's rewarding and meaning all. And I know that in your personal life that even -- definitely do that bit. Where -- that campaign are movement if you well it's all about. Celebrating. An inspiring. Acts of kindness and I -- guys that. Here big personality and where ever you are whether it now but that's farmers' market you just eight is the to lie about what -- it is you're doing and I think that that's what the thing that we're wanting to promote it that this this. About. Moment not merchandise it's about. Added to -- an accident and doesn't really have anything to you at all about money and I think and our society today sometimes we're so bombarded with. Merchandise a that he got -- bit he's got to have debt in order to be happy that different since reminding at that. The bad thing that the money. Are afraid and the best thing that the best moments of life at the time that we hear. With our friends and our family and an R&R movement and that that you can't purchase and sell. Fifteen about I have laughed off and we -- agency that's really responding to you on the recession. We worked for a number of clients that are a number of them -- an aviation and we all know what happened aviation the last couple of years then. How hard hit our community specifically has dead. And so. We got -- thinking at Christmas I am especially. The ethernet yet saying. That we looked feeling that a lot of people were probably feeling a little blue about not being able the do as much as they had eight years have. Where their community and charitable organizations that also put their family. And there's this thing. Now step back remember play it has metal both. You know and that helped the odd and that we. But together a program that initially -- that -- BA president group. But then we started reaching out to them partners and talking the are I've been there is you know -- East -- Billboard companies and printers and one of the first people that we talked you with the which I eat all. And that we -- that they already had disappeared but even program in -- when it really quick. You know very low expectations. That they would see if it for the paper but -- Alec that we needed to app because when you're talking about community. The first. You know organization I think got that my daily paper. The rate we went pocket they were that immediately. Yes we wanna do did we wanna be part of vet and they has been and the most amazing partner. They've done several different wave. Banning ad in the newspaper. The main thing we're trying to do -- the campaign. Is to drive people you on the web site and I appreciate you mentioning the URL. Cutting component that if you wanted to do something and school or in a church sure. With your own family or something. It if you are other resources you need right here on the web site.
We you know and it doesn't like is that I think the thing that struck me the most when I first currency in the ads pop up. In the eagle putt what that for the new charity you would it. It's really not that you go to the web site and yet I think the front part is political testimonials talk about a great way to get ideas on how you can be a part of nudity.
little into the -- kinda let you know there is one of the things that we wanna throw out there is that. When approaching that differently in that no. I think it's -- a great idea and I'm. So there are some of the things that folks have been -- Indiana know that you did it can be as simple as. You know picking up some trash out when they router in the parking lot of --
Let -- it would be counted them you know. -- extra mile probably the simplest thing is just that my feeling as stranger our when your that's. Check out at the grocery store. Instead it just picking -- and moving non actually looking at the person in the IA and having that little exchange and being kind you know that's probably the simplest thing. There's been so many wonderful things but this is the web site and one and that that degraded them on opposite -- friend occurred. Her his. And didn't have and so you you -- out and put it how comic -- you know. And again the kind of random act of kindness that's. It's been really really interesting far we've had we've been contacted. Again to that power of the web. We've been contacted the people all across the world who have seen -- aren't mine. And if they can participate reflect that you know anybody can be involved. That. Police get in several organizations that have really. Embraced it in line is that. Group that terrific young people out that would top aide. -- we'll let it meant. And Elliott school out of step yes you one of the class -- interpersonal communication. Ticket that that this semester long project. They go to the web site look at it and then each one comes up with their own here's what I'm going to duke and -- I had the privilege of going and hearing that. Even each individually. Pretty dense but they'd get for the master. And that that's. You know it is amazing and you know it. They had it ranged from. We have had more volunteer activity it. He's very personal thing from being. They -- anonymously. Other things you know the people obviously knew what they were doing. It can it could be something as simple as. You know get kneeling down and and and taking time with the trial you know again it's it's more about attitude they've been saying well.
You know and I think the best part is there's no one. It should pick should be precluded from playing in this this great cause and -- it so that doesn't take money it just takes a little effort. The leaders smiled and frowned and I did my part I you know the card that you gave me I carry -- my -- for awhile. Well try to make it short story long are we know about ten years old. When my parents used to take me to these Polynesian themed restaurants I grew up. And non North Carolina now but I grew up in Los Angeles and it was time to these places back in the sixties. And they were all incredibly. Well art director based on higher movie production designers to do the decorum restaurants. So when you walked in it was kind of like this you know fantasyland completely. Not done up from floor to ceiling. And if you were you know an adult that might seem like overkill or tacky but to a ten year old it was just like this amazing Disneyland. Polynesian Disneyland if you will. And everybody there was drinking these amazing looking drinks and elaborate mug is horrible and they can inflaming that came with like ice cold and -- around the straws and when I got old enough to drink -- these places out because those that think what's so good and they were all disappearing by that point. Kiki had been announced -- people have moved on to new trans. And I think if I want them make these and wanted to Abby Joseph Kaplan had to make to myself so that's kind of what started the whole thing off.
Well you know I remember back. My folks were avid Playboy club members. Oh yeah and the Playboy club would have d.'s themed nights and they went quite regularly and one of them was. You know -- the big Lou deal and they and they and they bring home while these nifty. Call heads and Tiki heads and and little umbrellas and they wouldn't have got a cool.
Yeah you happened was really indicate giving it back in the sixties it was just use Jimmy -- like -- bowling -- is Kiki. Clothing stores is particulate hell of sticky everything and -- he seemed cool and Chicago mansion and he also. Ran a story I don't remember exactly what yet in the 67 and how to throw an urban -- well. And it's an amazing photos spread of these people up in a Manhattan penthouse apartment has like that and they're mid century modern place salad and Kiki decorum. And again and -- in the but. These are tricks that they were popular for a reason back and they tasted good. Not unbeatable this. This didn't drink that lasted for 40 years ago I am I I can't think of another drink that it left -- I can't think of most any fan that lasted so long. For a decade is a long time for something to stay popular and hugely popular two. As because the drinks the drinks where the engines that drove the economy all these bars and restaurants in 2000 things that happened from the 1930s all the way into the seventies. They were really in the first Strickland made the 1930s by Don -- short on the beach -- He's sort of started the whole thing with the first Tiki bar in Hollywood in the first quote unquote Tiki drinks. He would kind of -- culinary genius is about seventy years ahead of this time. We read about the cocktail Renaissance it's going on now around the world where people are doing you know -- cocktails quote unquote -- a not source. You know fresh herbs and and fresh fruit and -- to do all kinds of amazingly elaborate culinary type drinks and stuff that you. Just wouldn't associate with cocktails meld -- was doing that in 1934. He was mixing drinks would like allspice Vanilla cinnamon. Fresh. Pineapple fresh passion fruit. Com highly abused honey is one of his secret sweeteners that is just an amazing. Array of very complicated things he was doing and only now are contemporary bartenders catching up to them now starting to rediscover his strengths. Yeah look at that you know. No -- Probably around my age I think. And in the seventies and -- if you drink became like and the worst possible thing you could order if you haven't faced a minute. They were contemptuously refer to assemble our umbrella drinks here and there are certain like big giant. Hurricane glasses in the -- slushy and frozen. And what -- like cruise ship drinks or -- you first felt. Site you'll -- in the third. -- not -- very important question but nobody really would ever think that they were sophisticated direct. But that's because when these places finally you know one out of fashion in the seventies. Com the address -- top secret because they were so usually profitable nobody wanted them to be printed. They've kept them very tight to their -- so when the place when and a bit less of the drinks recipes just -- disappeared with the places and all that was left. Would be cheaper knock off kind of drinks. You know those cruise ship trained so slushy drinks and that's what. People associated with tea he drinks for like years and years and years until they start coming back now.
But as you mentioned we're we're talking about drinks that are really complex and -- it -- in Aspen there's more spirits and beer involvement in this major who -- event that I ever would have imagined a decade ago and in the kind of fun we went to a Bombay sapphire mixing seminar. And every one got. The full in front of you with a full -- set that you got to take common courtesy of Bob is that our. And all these unusual. Herbs and ingredients in London lemons and serpent and the yen and engine. And we may attempt to different other drinks you know with the help -- master ecologists. They gotta do something to compete -- do something different and I think it lends itself perfectly. This -- not only are revival but even more creativity. In -- drinks.
Yeah I think you hit on the head guy when you said the you know that you found these cocktails at a food festival. These drinks -- culinary drinks I mean the kind of things that give the kind of mind that normally. The ship would have in the kitchen coming up would like elaborate new baroque and cut auctions. That's same mindset people are applying to cocktails now with spectacular on the we're living in a great time to be drinking cocktails -- Especially as opposed to the 90s80s and seventies was just one idea. Was desperate looking for a good -- and couldn't find -- if you -- let -- let down. As they do return the cocktail just a wonderful thing and it -- pushing it forward and really interesting new way as. I think it's fun and then would you get -- like -- and pretty warm on the East -- do but here in the midwest it's Welker. Yeah -- decides not exactly cool and breezy here nationally there. -- that good good good good weather for tea he drinks what we do we have a ten pound megabytes and all kind of an ingredient here. To really. -- flavor of the spirit so I think he got a ten pound block -- Again I was. Giving you a long answer to a very short question if yeah. If you don't attempt unblocked guys you have some fresh lime and and some sugar. And some well on the you can make yourself planters punch and he just can't go wrong with a combination.
There will look like they would come back -- that we will talk about a couple of recipes but I must've been really fun. his kitchen. Well bomb it gets -- equipment needed for tropical drinks is a lot more arm. It's a lot more intensely than you would need -- like regular classic cocktail we must. Typical classic cocktails are like two or three ingredients you know like on Manhattan is just. Urban removed from that isn't just register that and strain it. Com that's kind of the cheap date compared to tropical drink tropical drinks you need generally a lot more ingredients -- a whole lot more equipment -- squeezed or blender. You know various measuring tools because there's so many -- and -- got to make sure all the -- greens are measured properly so one doesn't dominate but you can make really good. Tea he drinks -- shaker. And -- squeeze -- plain old you know not -- squeeze her hand. Can separate kitchen that transparency and a measuring cup it doesn't take that much Yemen you're starting with basic recipes like a -- Korea or are we mentioned the planters punch. But you can do a lot without. And a how about we know of course that the type of step to -- is important to like not what I say line I don't mean like little key -- but you wanna get. No good size Mexican person lines which are little you know less acidic and make. The gives you more volume -- calls for a council lime -- you don't wanna be squeezing ten -- lines just one Mexican line we'll -- And and runs. You didn't more than just one -- I mean you know you got a lot of bars. And they'll make a whole lot of rum drinks so they basically just -- in a bottle -- Strom and -- a bottle of Puerto -- around that. For -- what really made him special was the way that runs were blended. The waited on the beach and we take a dry white Puerto Rican Romney electable Carty. And you would mix that would a more up floral. A little bit more of the K and not a gold Barbados -- And then he would take like a dark punch from and just give it another layer of flavor with some sort of like -- full bodied. Alas this case. So and that's mostly the kind of Ramallah to start on -- weapon mixing let. Myself lately in -- No the usually go to Jamaica prototype -- a lot of other countries are doing really -- now central and South America are making really nice punch drums and Trinidad and calm you and I talked earlier dot com desire -- from Trinidad I think that's really -- them to use in these countries as well.
I think it's so interesting and and you brought up a good deal of the at this point that. You know it everybody go to drink of road towards used to be it's got -- Scott -- fallen from favor but. Then there's been competition whether it was used task -- barrel Barbara indoor or you know you don't -- high -- tequila and they empty bottles or. But now -- is really you you're seeing more and more of the news. And crafted aged. Room that are just intense when it comes to flavor and frankly we have some -- last night. As an after dinner kind of a different issue after everything distraught with poppy -- things and and it was magic it was. And we just had a straight up and a nice look up and it was adorable little within the unit.
Yelling and that the sentiment -- we're talking -- it kind of like it can be -- certainly -- doesn't mix well underlings but it's got these some. Sort of really. Interest in chocolate and copy notes to me. And you know what better thing for dessert anatomy you're usually you're drinking coffee -- called lower -- liqueur or something like that. But yeah chocolate coffee. And run in the same glasses just can't beat.
OK so it is more of the things I think it really need the book is you've got however that a Romo overview and and you talk about. Some of these areas -- Barbados and Trinidad and implicitly you probably hadn't -- rum producers that are really making some magic up and have great round history. And they all bring another dimension at different bit of flavor. This sense of place if you will pure -- drinks and I think it be fun to experiment. You know we're talking about it having. You know everybody knows captain Morgan but you can go beyond that then. Some of the world from Barbados and so the future.
Yeah I mean didn't work within amazingly diverse. Spirit category I -- if you take ten tequila -- door or ten. Scotch is or -- urban and you try to mall. Yeah you gonna get variations. But not that great. But if you take ten different runs from ten different run producing regions. You know with the where sugar -- has grown in other volcanic soil or different kind of soil are quite different com. Different island temperatures soared -- the mountains of Central America it's gonna -- really really different Michael a white try -- A 180 degrees. From like a dark punch from from Trinidad -- or. Even bomb -- the point like Martinique and the the French islands in the Caribbean. Crowe immediately distill what's called Agricole -- Which is French for our agricultural run and what I mean it is mom produced from scratch. Fresh cut -- As opposed to distill from molasses or what the French call from industrial industrial ramp to take a -- process based trumped. And compared to assure that candidates from and the difference is just amazing. -- good guys and vote -- the -- twit but the other get all great and but all really radically different. And what done and the genius of Don each is that he figured out. Well I'll have to use. All these different around to different drinks what a start combining all these different basic flavors. Amidst some -- are really dense and heavy -- really -- drive. What can mix them together and get the best of both worlds and that is something you can do at home and you don't have to spend a fortune -- and you can go get. You know mini bottles those low fifty milliliter bottles and just experiment see what you liked what -- combinations make you happy.
Right what about for Jews you know -- you can buy -- reduced but it one of the things I love most of them on the road is an opportunity to eat and haven't adult beverage. McCormick -- because at the bar they're they're they're crushing -- it or not trade for -- there Freddie and make and -- fresh.
You should mention McCormick conflicts got to get in the cocktail dark -- if you know like in the 1980 whenever I would go out insurgent it decently may drag. McCormick which makes them they had them on the West Coast that was one of the few things you could go where there was a -- fresh troops on the bar and they would squeeze it right confront you India ranked. Com and yet there's nothing better than out. I'm always always squeeze Iran limestone ever buy bottled -- is actually -- no matter what the label probably benefit says. No organic -- is an old whatever percent of bottle it's just not gonna tasted. Oranges -- found you can get away with a 100% not from concentrate orange -- Which is great help cookie making party punches for a bunch of people you know as we don't underline -- grapefruit is great squeezed but you consider you can get away with some you know again on the percentages. In. Bottles or cartons. Of lemons you have to squeeze your own amendments pomp and of course the bane of both of our existence I'm sure is sweet and sour mix bottled Sweden's Pharmerica. There you go into a bar and you see that behind a bottle that's what they're putting in your Margarita and redecorating. But yeah. There's nothing like just -- if you can make your own sweet and sour mix in the -- Two parts fresh lemon juice to one part sugar syrup and you're done you know and that's just infinitely better. It's gonna just really make -- drink pop.
Just beat you -- get an interesting thing on you and I both are not big on flavored alcoholic spiritually you know it but. CoComment is such an easy thing and if you don't have -- Lopez to add your drinks and some -- call for. A coconut -- your little the little -- or were you talked about what kind of coconut -- to use than not. And I commend you prefer using. Use this and not this and giving the name I think that's important then.
Oh yeah thanks to Iowa and I'm glad that you saw that that's Dassault in the glossary you really didn't we just let. Yeah -- talking about and what you touched on is that some. Most flavored rounds are relevant. You don't need to buy orange flavored when you can -- a nice drive around with -- orange dismissed. What's the problem but coconut rum is the one -- from the I've found to be really useful because. Bomb as you know. Com -- it's a very like six substance and it you can go the other direction and use coconut water. Which is also delicious but it's very watery and it has very hard to get any kind of -- texture. Excuse a lot of it's getting that face and then you get a very watery -- Coconut -- is the one kind of flavored -- where are you okay about the couple on the bottle and if you buy a decent plan that isn't too medicinal tasting. And we won't mention them but done you know about a couple of good ones. You know our cruise and I received argues he has a good -- around. And now. But some. But it could coconut -- going to give you that -- flavor. And it's not gonna make you drink too thick like the cream and not to make it into water like coconut water so it's -- good labor saving devices and until I Senator Obama I'm all about saving labor so on. --
Well and then you know when I think back my folks actually not only when -- came home from. Is Lou well things -- but what we're grub but when they had partied with friends. They had a quite a collection. Of those. A -- usual drink beverage you know -- You know coconut shells and and -- and -- you know all kind of neat thing to drink out of the the Tiki dead without -- holder for the umbrella but that you know yes. --
Another thing that -- I think one of the reasons that aside from their tastes. That the ETT drink was so popular for so many years what it was like all the cocktail conversation piece. You know the drinks were presented very theatrically in these like really cool you know mom. Nicely fired Tiki mug with the grimacing face on a more and like elaborate balls. And it was just fine I mean it was just a novel find ways to deliver here alcoholic beverage. And Tom. -- you're you're used to be able to go to restorers and antique stores and find this stuff everywhere because and that's. Fifties and sixties everybody was doing in the backyards. And now it's a little hard and I got the money being spent a little more money. But people making new ones now -- there's a lot of content out -- making pretty good amount.
Well I think with this new wave of make solid just in the mixology competition whether it's. That -- the cocktail nor under completely gone all the young guns behind the bar and put -- bottles and -- and using unusual or. Often unheard of ingredients you know they're they're gonna. That they're gonna go back at -- just because. It's a whole -- dimension of flavor and then to incorporate all the things that make him look pretty so that when you're sitting around trouble and I -- I'll have what he's happy.
Exactly like -- you -- I'm one guy who used to work at the Mike -- restaurant in Fort Lauderdale they did the biggest selling driven to drink all the mystery drink. And when you -- won the first saw that the first thing that was a big gong was one off and then the mystery girl would come out. You know -- grass skirt and should do little -- surprise given the way around your neck and present you with a mystery drink which is just -- drink them.
Well what I told me that -- when one person or that drank the chain reaction happened where that -- would go off like every minute. The -- to the ordering drinks. So contemporary bartenders. You know are of course concerned about staying in business as well it. Doing good work yet -- all that are all about creating something fun something interesting that people are gonna talk about around the water cooler next day and come back again. Well folks if you wanna do that at home you need a copy of speech but I'm very remixing gallery of DP caucus. The teach you keep up that. They know that there is something guy I think you hit on something good that's gotta work on that next. But -- he had that have followed by a rumble alive is good gift what a pleasure to speak with you my friend I hope someday we -- that the peacock. -- do those pleasure is all mine guys have a great weekend for an. Very young guys -- the good life don't forget this noon to one every Saturday here on news radio thirteen thirty. We'll see you next week.
