Good afternoon and welcome to -- stadium on the campus of Wichita state university for the championship game of the 2010. State farm Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. The opponents are the two teams that tied for the regular season title the Illinois State red birds with a record of thirty and 22. And the shocker is of Wichita State. At 41. And eight team they've met three times during the regular season in Normal, Illinois with Wichita State winning two of the three games. And Jane this is the kinda game at the time of the season that you play for all year this is where you wanna be in games that mean something like this that this.

Point a year well you know during the regular year these two teams proved that they were the best in the league and in this tournament they prove that they were the best in the short series so. I can't think of two other teams that are more deserving and you know Illinois state of the kind of team that just doesn't blow you away with any one particular thing they just seemed to win especially want conference play has started. And not I doubt that they'll be shaken or nervous or in those types of things I mean there's going to be natural jitters and butterflies and things like that but. Due to expect Illinois State delayed data give this shocker is that it would be. You know you be sorely mistaken I think it's gonna happen.

They're -- anyone batting average just a little below Wichita State's 43 home runs in 52 games not quite as much power. But yet we saw them break out in just jump all over a series of shocker pitchers in the middle game of the series scoring eighteen runs in hitting five home runs so. As you say you can't take anything for granted on balance on the full season Wichita State she has some advantage it is a very capable team.

They are and I think Wichita State (%expletive) it's not on -- the game it was with the Evansville game game one. Is that I use crowd here bandits and I think that's certainly possible. This crowd is as big as we hope that will be. And as loud as we hope we will be. Maybe he'll have some effect maybe not necessarily on core remains that you know who knows when when their into the game part of it they are definitely party action. Maybe the biggest thing that happened to Wichita State through the course of this kind of crazy week was simply getting that win at 1:30 in the morning on Thursday night Friday morning. Because now. With the full day off for both teams yesterday the but the rest is pretty equal Illinois State played earlier that day but with neither team having to play yesterday. Hijackers could sleep in on Friday certainly last night should've gotten a decent night's sleep in and likewise both teams haven't thrown -- pitcher since Thursday yeah they were far away from have a game. Maybe not necessarily suspended held over to the to the next day which would be yesterday that that that was great obviously for both teams that they didn't have to play yesterday. Everybody's plan from the time they got here. Should they go through their side of the bracket three you know let's bring back there it's on Saturday which does states know different obviously on my state gonna do that. So you know everything worked out for both teams and you know -- great game to game today. And both teams bringing back pictures on three days who had fairly similar days. Core remains realized they only went seven innings during Cooper nine with a pitch counts almost identical -- 10304. Remains 170 for Cooper and so both should be is not equally rested and ready to go yeah I you know core remains numbers don't really jump off the page yet to -- the way he pitches does the everything he does. Says that aggressiveness he exits quickly. He's got a quick arm. He comes right at hitters -- this pitches are you know devastating in the Hall of Fame type it is he would have 93 yen have. You know above average anything else but he competes -- yeah and and of course Jordon Cooper as we've seen unflappable this that the kind of game that he was built for. You know and he's a competitor also obviously analysts sell -- short on. -- it competitor. A competitor plotting to win become an -- guys but. He does so calm and cool that this is that the kind of -- a guy like him thrives off. Maybe it and maybe the one difference ended its kind of unusual for this stage return emitted in most years but. Illinois State I think would be ecstatic if they get five good innings out of -- if he goes say five -- there either ahead or exit within or runners so. With Copeland and long out of their bullpen that they'll throw extended innings -- more than happy to make a move early I think what you guys stayed ideally would love to see Cooper be effective for a little longer than that. Absolutely I think you hit right on the head that's exactly what mark Kingston and gene Stephenson -- their respective starters. Cooper a little bit longer for Wichita State sake but. They've got to all conference guys Illinois State does in their bullpen that they are more than willing trot out there for as long as it takes and that's when I I you know just. I wouldn't want. Gas and -- manager for Illinois State but worst case scenario. Who knows when those first few guys come in or how many innings they eat out because it's now or never for that obviously -- state. At least has. Earned some bubble talk consideration. But there's no such talk for Illinois State's -- you know. Who knows when those two guys who come in but they will -- as long as they have to try to win this game no question about that. Kingston would like for the -- anyway. To combat that Wichita State's gotta jump out early and get ahead of -- and I mean more than 12 runs in order not to seek any longer right Copeland. It's gonna have to beat by 162172. Something like that by the fourth inning I mean really. Rocked this guy pretty quickly if you don't wanna see those two left indelible -- You need not knock out core remains out second or third inning. And the second one is that it efficiency early from -- from Cooper because Wichita State would like to see him go six or seven innings. He needs some quick early innings you know 81014. Pitch innings. In the first two or three innings can't afford to have any point five -- you know. Out of the stretch all the time and have eighty pitches by the fourth the fifth inning it. That's not gonna do it for Wichita State in the sail through a few innings early so we settle into its deep into the game for the shocker. And the third with clean up the defense and -- Stevenson. Kind of swept the other night under the rug that you know -- analysts say make excuses but he didn't seem worried about. And I'm glad I hope he's not and I hope that wasn't jitters from the players because some of those throws looked like it. There's no reason for those guys to be nervous any of the infielders are you know -- last or anybody else. Clean up those were preventable errors in my opinion. Easy double play. Corals play it was a little tough for solid given that Johnny -- come under some fire for not take it for not picking out any of those balls but. Those were unnecessary for the most part in my mind. And they better not be jittery type of mistakes because they're -- you need for that weren't game number sixty or whatever the season and you're at home so don't be nervous it's gonna play again.

And I thought you know without trying to make excuses maybe you could give a little bit a credence to the fact that that game started at 1035 was still go until 130 Evansville. A very good defensive team kind of gave way a couple of runs also instance you know that may have been a factor at all that it certainly been uncharacteristic for soccer's over the last three weeks -- so well Jean is quick to jump on Wichita State when they don't play like they should. So the fact that he didn't dog pile after the made four errors and and you know -- Make things worse or or really jump all over by -- borrow whoever and lastly made a mistake. That was refreshing so you know I hope he's right I hope that was just that the circumstances and an anomaly and we don't need to worry about it. Because they make four more hours today. They probably won't survive -- got lucky win that game Thursday night. As an extension of of what you're talking about with don't be nervous no reason to be. I would even -- to play like you've been there before because even though last year was a typical game for this program. Most of the guys in the Wichita State lineup including Jordon Cooper word in this tournament dent into the championship game last year and played two regional games. Where Illinois State this is all new for them and and even. I thought maybe you know their last series in Evansville where they could win that your -- championship not right by winning 23 only got one album. Might show that there's still a little bit learning going on with handling the situation I think that's a good point -- like -- something cute at that. You know because they haven't been in this kind of situation the war. If it's close if it's jittery time if there's second and third one out the plane needs to be made you know maybe it doesn't yet. Taking care of because they didn't take care of the business and Evansville and you know. You're right it's his big stage for them and it's all or nothing right here so. You know for an Illinois State and you want him to play with reckless Manning like they have nothing to lose in the coming -- long time. At the time that they're gonna get those pitches and make the most of them we've we've gone over everything with -- hitters they know what what they need to do and what to look for certain situations. And it now it's up to them -- they're guys that the factors to get an opportunity to see the ball where it where it's gonna be and then and arrive on time and -- well.

Obviously this team doesn't have some of the depth of experience in postseason play familiar costumes of had a do you feel like it is a plus that they were. In this championship game a year ago most of these guys and added a couple of regional yeah. -- I think.

You know when they were the number one overall seed he knows what he speaks and I imagine Illinois State pretty fired up to have.

And certainly with all due respect to those that proceeded even Illinois State with that background has come in trying to set the bar higher trying to raise expectations. One of the reasons he accepted the position was a commitment on the part of the administration to upgrade the facilities for baseball which we had a chance to see firsthand the spring. And so this is a program on the rise for sure and Missouri Valley Conference.

no longer do they have the swallow hard and kind of roll their eyes when a recruit says well okay where you play. Because that was -- that that was the downside for Illinois State frankly but now the facility is much nicer of course. The stadium itself Duffy -- Next for Illinois State will be upgrade the facilities when you talk about locker rooms and dug out some things like that amenities for the actual players but they're taken baby steps but steps nonetheless.

Should mention that Wichita State will be the visiting team for today's game and that was determined strictly on a coin flip each team as the top -- their bracket got to play as the home team in their opening game. Then they flip flopped and -- visiting team. In their second game and in both for home teams in the third game so they had had an equal amount of time says the home team in the visiting team. And so coin flip was held Illinois State wanted. Wichita State ended up eleven and twelve on the road this year although the shoppers were nine and four in their last thirteen games away from home. And when the -- present batted as the visiting team including a couple of good neutral site games one in mobile beginning of the year and their middle game in this tournament. They've gone thirteen and twelve batting as the visitor.

I thought we had the feeling now other play pretty good you know the start to -- a little bit but sixteen on twentieth more than pretty good and hopefully they are playing their best baseball that's right time and and they'll try to. remains an amount for Illinois State and certainly he's one of their most experienced guys. A junior from Houston Texas six feet 200 pounder. Who. Who. Has been in the rotation since his freshman year at Illinois State and he's a guy that they have a lot of confidence -- he was actually pretty highly touted coming out of high school in Houston has got to. Gradually gotten better and better during his time at Illinois State. Over his first two seasons he spent quite a bit of time playing in the outfield when he wasn't pitching this year he's been strictly a picture. And you know just as Wichita State did with Clinton McKiver last year taking him out of the bullpen and making him strictly a first baseman. Then. You know it seems to have helped in terms of just concentrating on one thing --

Talk about him at the top of the broadcast about know what he offers stuff wise it's not ace like stuff. But if you don't have Friday night type of stuff. You better be a Bulldog and he is that he comes right LT he's aggressively tries to make you swing the bat he's gonna he has more hits than innings bits but. You know for a guy like him. The way that he pitches it's more than the numbers. And for remains obviously inspired a lot of confidence when he pitches for Illinois State and this is the biggest game they've played since probably 1994.

That is when they won their only Missouri Valley Conference tournament in 28 years as a member and they're looking to add a second one today. You would hope they start to come out of it just a little bit seeing the ball better and forget approach Thursday -- seventh. Four doubles and a home run among his seven hits against the red birds drove in five runs in the three game series 322 for the year.
