The candidates have never been -- been allowed to have civil -- so I hope everything works out well for the candidates and also people in the audience. That said. -- carbon as a third generation kids. Born and raised in Wichita. Graduated from southeast. With Wichita State University graduated from their -- so. I paid my way through a solid state university. I started my working career fourteen years old in garden city Kansas. Working in the -- summertime. I carried my career -- through sundry jobs Intel -- hosting -- all trashed his door to door. Missile desk -- advertising. I even have the opportunity -- houses and college hill. But lasted most important -- repossessed cars. So if you wanna have fun on Saturday night and -- somebody's front yard the dark and steal a car. That would give you quite an experience and life. But that's that I am very have five grown children six grandsons. Unfortunately no granddaughters. I'm a businessman I am not a politician. I'm not looking for an on the job promotion. I'm not trying to build political resonant. I have skills in the business world for over four decades. I owner and or involved -- over thirty small businesses and I'm talking about people. My companies from four to about fifteen to sixteen individuals. I know how to balance the budget. I -- know how to beat the payroll and I will have been in years past there was Friday afternoons when I was at the drive up window trying to make sure it happened. I understand ever increasing government regulation in the business is -- men. I understand taxes that they take more out of my billfold that I truly can't afford but would they take that money it -- I cannot create more jobs. And growth for the future of -- would solve this district. I understand the constitution. It's number one responsibility their constitutions protect us the people. I understand the first and second the tenth of the sixteenth amendment especially. Because those -- the very amendments that the President Obama administration. Is trampling on so successfully. We need to get back to states' rights competition. Property rights. We need to get control of our ever increasing budget that is truly drowned out all of us in this room and debt. In my grandchildren will have the opportunity unfortunately. To pay the price. Knew where spending their money today. I am running for congress from the port district. And I do ask for your vote thank you.
Right -- now we'd like to hear from -- Mike Pompeo Mikey get three minutes for opening statements that are great thank you Steve.
Thank you everyone for coming out this evening I am Mike Pompeo. And I'm running for congress. I I promise those are -- you can't see I'm doing this without a teleprompter. And I am doing -- no expectation that out of a Nobel Peace Prize and so that's a little different than some other folks. All begin tonight. Passes to give you the bottom line right up front. It's the way act -- ballot when they aren't we had -- factored -- called block BLU active at the bottom line right up front. I think with the country in the place that it is in the small business challenges that you alt space you deserve that. In the bottom line is this our country as that a serious crossroads. And -- federal government has lost its way. In fundamental ways that we all know -- small business owners. And ways that we know and our families and in our churches and our community. And one go to Washington DC and be part of the group. The brings it back brings it back to its foundation. Returns us to a country where the federal government does two things that the constitution's held today. Number one keep us safe. Keep -- protected protect our borders. I think -- acted out of the way. Let us let us live our lives the way we now let us raise our children the way we'd like -- let us run our business with about one to leave. Burdensome interference that we are all experiencing today. Those of the two things I I never run for office before so many -- in this room and listening tonight -- don't know the name Pompeo. I had a graduate from West -- 1986 and served in the army for five and a half years. The first three or and a -- Germany where we patrol east German and Czech border we were on freedom's frontier during the Cold War. A left baton with the law school practiced law for a couple years -- to Kansas. Where without West Point buddy in my -- start of the company called -- aerospace. Aircraft manufacturing business one very important. Industry in this community and ran that for ten years old my interest in 2005. Today I run a company called center international is actually a member of Lima. And we sell oil field equipment and that is we we we sold -- equipment until 2009. If we were within itself very much like many your business as we had a very difficult year. You know what it's like -- ocean shows a note it's like when the EPA writes I understand when your Internal Revenue Service calls. Wanna go to Washington DC NB part of fundamentally allowing small businesses to succeed. Changing our tax code in a way that they can't so that we can compete here in Kansas and you're gonna regulations that destroyed small business. All across our country and right here in south central Kansas. A look forward to our conversation tonight sometimes I think our answers. That may sound similar but take a good look we are very different candidates hope you'll get a chance to know us and watch out we're running our campaign. And watch out watch how we are. Building teams all across the port district of Kansas. Thank you all very much your time.
I don't want to hear from -- showed or gene you have three minutes. Thank you Steve and I thank you everybody for being here this is a first time that we set to. Next to each other and we can't roses that debates this is really nice. My name is Jason -- and I drove down are now only bright brought me here from Topeka. I I have a 100% voting record in the Senate. For eight years out of that -- and to mention that they didn't vote in the Senate tonight I brought the majority leader because he's the one. Hey decides ten votes are everybody that's we have so he's sitting in the audience -- will go back act tonight. We've been working hard on the budget today and and we were cutting that we haven't had enough. And -- it's been a difficult year for the legislature but it's been more difficult for you law. And I want to thank all of you for this year and -- last year. And persevere. And keeping your doors open and trying not to layoffs people. I wanna thank you for putting up with the health care situation present and the health care situation future. And I I admire all of you for operating a business and doing a service that you're doing to your community into mind. I have served in the Senate for ten years and the school board for twelve years. And my career has been serving the community and south central. Kansas. I have tried to promote economic development and bring back jobs. One of the things that I have done is develop any. Economic plan and principles that we gave a huge issue. And if you would like that this plan I would be glad to send it to you. I've talked to people on the reason I'm running for. That congress is to help end this recession and help bring back economic recover. One of the things that I believe that I have done this -- have a record. I have voted to pet. Machinery accidents and an. Luckily 43 million dollars -- or your apps for unemployment insurance taxes and this just came in -- It's ridiculous we can't pay anymore. I grew up in southeastern Kansas -- have lived here for 36 years. And I believe that my experience in -- school board. And the Senate and my experience. And my background in southeastern Kansas and -- whole district make me. Able to hit the ground running to serve you in Washington DC. -- congress thank you very.
And -- we'll ask each of the candidates a question again rotation here these are questions of -- From our audience it's evening at the Wichita independent business association annual -- so we will begin this time now with -- Hartman. And ask the question what -- as the best way out of the economic situation. Two minutes -- I think the question. Of the most obvious in the simplest way that I've always been trained doctor my business skills. Over the years is you have to create businesses you have to create jobs. Jobs historically the press has taken from bad times together if you can put more money in the small business person's back pocket. Get the government out of the way so they can create those jobs. And we need to work on the tax structure -- on the personal level state level corporate taxes. We cannot continue to take take take from the citizens and small business and expected to take is out of the recession in the dark times we find ourselves today. So -- a businessman. I understand Ellis gets done I've created thousands of jobs in the fourth district. The jobs -- credit you can actually drive by on the way home united stadium. So I do have the skills I do have the track record I can't provide the jobs and I can't help turn this district around. Or more prosperous. Time.
Right now Mike Pompeo the question again what do you see as the best way out of the economic situation like you have two minutes.
Through -- Birthday at first question you always ask if basically the problem is that diagnosis. The Obama administration found that we didn't have enough regulation and needed more government. And of course today when you diagnosed patient incorrectly yet that the disease even worse than the disease and unemployment we'll know here in south central Kansas is far worse. In the eight or 9% that is public report is a problem -- district. My guess is that let's go -- one and six. And I've lived in the aircraft manufacturing business one that impacts many of you here tonight very very directly. You have to create a place where people will take risks and put capital in the fourth district of Kansas that means that -- corporate caps -- tax structure that looks right. Means capital gains taxes that look right means regulations that are duplicative. We -- plating business. For years we have six agencies that regulate the disposal of our water into the -- but I want clean water just as much -- any of it. But we didn't need six agency six sets of regulations often duplicate it on occasion conflicting. -- tell us how to dispose of water. Which we know this do this this economy will come back when we stop imposing these burdens -- risk takers. We see in Washington DC people who have been elected in don't know that they don't understand the simple -- of principle of economics. In health care is a perfect example we know that it's something it's great demand will be infinite and today at the point -- for health care often break. The way to attack health care problem is off. Everyone that you had cost problems for your employees your business before Obama care they'll be worse now. The solution is not more government intervention or health care system but rather last and that's how we'll turn this economy around. I thank you gene showed or what you see is the best way out of the economic situation.
Thank you very much. Part of the problem is. Government tends to thank had to raise revenue you have to raise taxes. Today. In it in Ways and Means Committee there were two suggestions that would affect. Business by raising taxes one who has bringing back in the leak checks for one year and there was another one that was a decoupling. Bill that I was a little bit more complicated and I said no. We have to -- let businesses. Finished the job they we have to let businesses. Try to get through the recession without having undue cost brought to them by adding taxes. One of the things that I think would help stimulate the economy that should've been done. At the very beginning when we saw that this this recession -- so bad was to have. A six month payroll tax holiday for -- both employers and employees. A transportation planner at the national level would also bring jobs. Not to short term but long term. We have to make sure that -- is the capital gains tax. And the surcharge. That would be added to employers to pay back that unemployment insurance. I'm gonna try to keep that and not have that surcharge -- added on for two employers to have to pay that back. There are tax incentives. To be able to help businesses. But them. But I agree with my opponents to just don't put undue regulation of the burden. I help businesses get through this time without more regulations.
All right thank you -- now Jimmy Anderson gym again the question is what do you see is the best way out of the economic situation. Well folks when you break it down for you here I mean I'm a common sense Reagan conservative and you hear a lot of that incentives you're a lot about tax breaks you hear a lot about low taxes. Have we done any of that in the past 3040506070. Years. No we have not. What we need is a complete overhaul of the tax system it's not happening folks and that needs to happen with the fair tax. They are running our lives with the tax code. That is how they're doing it. And we are beholden to the government through the IRS code book in his network and forests if I'd like to see some hands if anyone thinks that's workforce. It is not ladies and gentlemen we talk a lot about we've been talking about a for decades we need common sense conservatives. Like myself. And those across the country to go to Washington and over -- the tax code and repeal the sixteenth amendment. Which allows the government to run our lives. Ladies gentlemen there's there there are many things we need to do that is number one we need to encourage businesses to come back into our district into our state. And into our country and what is happening right now because of our tax code they're leaving. And have left this country and along with our jobs. The second thing we need to do losing to a consumption tax is and it will encourage those corporations to come. Back into this country and higher power people. Thank you.
thank you -- our next round of questions we begin with Mike. Pompeo and the question is where do you stand on trade and international trade and NAFTA like.
Two minutes and I up. I am very supportive refrigerated very supportive of NAFTA. The businesses here in the fourth district of Kansas and depend in large measure on having access to global marketplace. Our aircraft manufacturing companies. And -- Agricole. Depend on having access to international marketplace and customers all over the world. We must make sure that we pass trees both bilateral otherwise that. Providers who are very cost effective their vision of providing these -- the opportunity. To reach into these marketplaces. We will create jobs if were prepared to trade. This administration has three free trade agreement sitting on its -- that they won't pass and won't -- in Colombia and elsewhere. These are customers begging for American products at the right price. And our businesses need to have the opportunity to sell -- to those marketplaces. In sophisticated ways and compete effectively all over the world and what we do. Good things happen for jobs here in south central Kansas I'm quite confident we can we can compete any place.
Again now he sure the question what do you where do you stand that is on trade international and after asking.
I support it and and especially and a manufacturing. And agricultural industries here. Free trade has helped us especially with agriculture. But we have to be careful that we. Trying to keep our jobs here in Kansas and not export the jobs down to Mexico. And we have a very very strong aviation community here and what I want to try to do is keep jobs here. Form any. Business labor so have a business labor summit -- to try to work together between business and labor. To keep that jobs here. And then we can make plenty of products to be sent overseas and for free trade in Mexico or or worldwide. This is a global market we know that. And we need to be able to. Provide those products especially agricultural products for Kansas.
All right next two Jim Anderson gym again the question is where do you stand on trade and international ineptitude. Well I am not a fan folks. -- break it down here again of NAFTA I think it costs us jobs. I believe. The it leans more towards the Mexican government Canadian government. I am all for free trade. Open borders. That is what we need that met in my opinion NAFTA hasn't helped us. At all it is just helped the other countries and hurt us and we have more and more and more jobs leave in the country. Because of it. The way you encourage companies. Corporations come into this country. Is to lower. The federal regulation and rules that we have standing in our way. The US government. And again overhauling the tax system to encourage those people to come into this country and bring those companies back again. And higher are people folks Alitalia. If if they know. That they're gonna have to pay consumption tax on all of our products. And their products they're gonna bring their companies back here is not gonna wanna pay their consumption tax over there. They're gonna come here start the company hire the people and then they're not gonna have the burden of all those taxes rules and regulations -- you need a modicum of rules and oversight. All of these programs that our government has implemented over the years has put us in to the situation. That we Aaron thank you.
I don't hear from a when cart.
And in that -- again the question of where do you stand on trade international Annette. Thank you I -- for free trade. That said we must be very guarded against free trade. -- the detriment to the jobs. And I'd like to thank that is not one of the same that we can do both we can enjoy free trade who we can't protect our jobs. You need to remember that the trillions of dollars for the death of forty some percent of that is owned by China. So unless we wanna get Rosetta Stone to learn how to speak Chinese. We better be well aware of where the dollars are going -- this country when we print them China's buying. So we need to free trade and we need to taken to create a free trade and keep the jobs the next thing you do against the tax structure. We need -- much more friendly tax base tax structure for small businesses so once again they can't create those jobs and they can begin to compete. More strongly. -- the other countries in the world it is a global economy. We are going to have to work under that. We're gonna have to thrive under that and I think we can we restructure our tax code in or wherever the jobs are and how we are going to obtain and keep those jobs.
Our next question. Involves health reform and thirteen children are being used. The rotation though she answered this person to do you agreed to. Allow a partisan commission to regulate Medicare. As noted in the act taking authority away from congress in two minutes.
I think it's partisan. It's not a good idea. And so I do not agree with pat. We need to be more nonpartisan. And bipartisan. But not. Partisans strictly. Party lines and so I do not think that that would be in the best interests of health care. There is sometimes frustration out we were sitting at at the table backed fair and and so much misunderstanding. And and people are so concerned. And out number one. Presently what health -- areas but secondly what they upcoming health care plan. Will be and a timetable and what it means and the high cost. And so they didn't think it was a very interesting discussion Buckeyes. We just don't know what it's going to bring you there are some things I like can something's I don't. I found today. A very good summary -- this and implementation timeline. Have this patient protection and affordable care act. If anybody wants it's John debt -- LO BE RT. Dot com or talk to me and I'll give -- copy this look at you an idea that everything that's in this health plan. It's for us to understand it better.
I think he does Tim Anderson. The question again health reform. Do you agreed to allow partisan commission to regulate Medicare as noted in the -- taking authority away from congress commanders. Well. First evolved.
I've -- I'm not a fan of that I don't believe that. It's our government's job. To regulate health care it's not our job it's not the government's job to regulate any of those types of things it is unconstitutional. And I know that sounds simple but that's the way the founding fathers intended it for it to be very simple. It is it that the federal government has thirty enumerated powers in the United States constitution pretty simple spelled out pretty straight everything else relegated to the states. And its citizens. It is -- an individual issue. It is the government does not have the right to mandate to us health care. Or any other type of care. It I would go as far to say it could be a state issue perhaps but I believe it's an individual issues. And I believe in my heart but as far as reform goes I'm all for reform. -- reform I'd start right there number one. To go across state borders so you can pick insurance that you want. Open up the free markets were all business people in here that's gonna drive the product and drive the price. But when they get the government gets in the way it all falls apart ladies and gentlemen those two things for reform going across state borders and I would I would add. -- as well. Reduce the rule and regulation. And we also need pharmaceutical. Reform as well but it does not need to come from our government.
Hello sweetheart and no -- again the question is health reform and -- to allow. Commission to regulate Medicare as noted in the act taking authority away from congressman part. The first part of the other question and probably into the question for me is the Obama health care program is ill advised. We cannot afford it we do not have. Trillions of dollars to support. The President Obama health care program. There's no way that we can afford this secondly set. There is only intrinsic parts of this. Tenth amendment -- states rights. We are being told from the federal government of the state level how we're going to run on the dollar health care than many other parts of our lives. I do think is unconstitutional. Although the -- kids today it has not been willing to challenge that. We need to take you get back to the simplicity of several things Medicaid assistance program. We cannot afford to continue to have the federal government -- millions and millions of dollars down our throats we Kansas are gonna have come up with the money. Times are tough enough as they are. Medicare is a bond with the people much like Social Security. We have to fund those programs -- some level to continue for the senior citizens and what they need and expect. But the end of the day we met him and we need to do in congress can start to drastically week. The president health care bill.
To make it more. Affordable if possible for the small business people I negotiate with insurance companies every day. And the negotiation of my small companies as they put the brochure across the table they -- it open to page six. The negotiation and when they tell me what my new previous will be for the following year and I'm sure everybody -- had the same fun experience. Negotiator insurance companies last fifteen or twenty years is nonexistent. So I think we've all I'm saying both small businesses these to get government off their back so we have a chance to run our businesses and be successful. Thank you -- and an eloquent and let's go to Mike Pompeo and Mike again that the -- the restate the question health reform. Do you agree to allow partisan commission to regulate Medicare as noted in the act. Taking authority away from congress like.
No I don't. And as mr. arms that it at the air space and -- century international. -- the worst day of the year every year is when the insurance company calls and says I'm coming out to tell you what your new premiums are gonna be. And then when they sit down -- tell you how lucky or that they only went up 10%. Desert desert terribly difficult discussions and they were before. This law was passed. Amok mr. -- I can't imagine tweaking this bill. Can't imagine what good tweaking this bill could possibly do there's not a thing in it that creates value. Reduces costs and makes the opportunity for small businesses to grow here in south -- south central Kansas possible. What we need to do is get rid of it we need to move towards repeal as quickly as we can and we elect enough. Conservative folks to go to Washington DC will. And may take us a little bit and in the meantime I'm perfectly prepared to be just a little bit partisan. Because when it comes to principal one can't back down. And the producers are prepared to go to Washington DC and throw sand in the gearbox of the health care plan we've got to slow it down we've got to stop it. That under this plan fully 25%. Of Americans will be part of Medicaid. Point 5% at Kansas part of Medicaid it is that program is broken today. Doctor your own personal position talked to someone you know in the medical community they are unlikely to be someone who today will take a Medicaid patient. Imagine when that Medicaid load triples and many of those ducks decide this isn't very much fun anymore and I can't make money doing it will reduce quality. Will reduce access and will increase cost -- every small business represented here tonight. We need to fundamentally it's. The Obama plan was 180 degrees the wrong direction.
All right have you -- defending him these questions are coming our audience here tonight at the Wichita independent business association annual meeting. And the next question goes to Jim Anderson. To begin with -- it seems the current federal administration is putting more and more regulation on small business. What will you do to regulate big government.
Well the first thing -- there is is. Move to reduce the size of government on a business owner my wife and -- runner small business in town. And we feel the impact of taxes and rule and regulation every single day as most of you do. I will go through federal programs program by program and number one if their constitutional. Then you work with if they're not. -- you do not. I would get rid of the Education Department the Energy Department I mean there's so many departments that we do not need. It is just. Fundamental shame what what has happened. But. Him immediately reduce the rule and regulation and the programs and start. To vigorously. Move to overhaul. The tax code and -- system. Which is the way the federal government again. Drives our lives and drives our company I don't think there's one person in this room that hasn't been affected. By the tax code in the IRS I mean really we run our businesses. Through the tax code. That's how we do it. And -- it with more like minded individuals like myself. Go to Washington. And fight. To fundamentally. Reduce. The size of the federal government starting number one with the tax code thank you.
We wanna hear from lake --
And the question again -- it seems the current federal administration is putting more and more regulation multiple business what will you do to regulate big government. The very first thing you need for quote big government is to downsize it to small government. When you have tens of thousand. They have to have some. It's called regulate. On the trucking company drilling company. I have restaurants I have a multitude of small businesses and every single small business I have a multitude dozens. A different regulators that are continually on my back trying to do everything can make me turn a corner and to go a different direction. Downsize the federal government tremendously get back to states' rights the tenth amendment. It's written in invisible -- it is time to somebody. In Washington read it.
So they can check on your health care to make sure you provide adequate health care whatever that is we haven't all been told yet. That'd -- can downsize the government we can slowly but surely. Take to bureaucrats out of our allies and let us get on -- doing what we do best.
I doubt we want to hear from Michael Palin Mikey get the question. It seems the current federal administration is putting more and more regulation on small business what will you do to regulate big government Mike.
Yet like the it's like the old Reagan line. Starve the beast. The way you contain the federal government. Is to reduce the amount of take that it what's on each and every one of us and our families and in our small businesses. Everyone in this room tonight knows you can spend money you don't have for very long. In doing business cute family -- Internet family. You. You can't do you church hit a good boy scout troop. Federal government gets away -- with a little bit longer. Because it's got this thing color printing press the Federal Reserve to help them out. This is a spending problem we have. This is not a tax problem. You must shrink the scope and scale of the federal government -- prayer. A growing our economy back in digging up from the enormous debt the -- each and every one of us. And my son -- if we continue with the threat of spending we'll have marginal tax -- in the low eighties by the time he reaches his early fifties. Can't you. There's lots of places you can go attack I've heard a couple of the folks up here tonight talk about some of them. But nobody wants to talk about -- the animal in the room and politicians don't the elephant in the room and -- politicians don't like you. They talk about department the earmarks and I'm all for getting rid departments and and eliminating earmarks but that challenge we face. That we spend more entitlements this year than all of the total revenue. So you need to listen to us as we talk over the next coming 94 days. If someone's not prepared to tell you how they're prepared to solve the social security and Medicare problem you should check. Check them off your list we can solve social security and impact no one over age 55. And we can solve Medicare in the same way. There are plans to do it and -- know how to make sure that that happens and without solving those two big economy there is no prayer of regulating.
Raining and our federal government.
Now let's hear from people -- again -- the question is it seems current federal administration is putting more and more regulation on small business. What will you do to regulate picked up.
And that's true and it's trying to get through recession and we should not be putting on the taxes or new regulations I want to give an example. And that is the community banks. They are having to pay more fees have front. And -- Having more regulations. And that's not having enough money are having money to be able to land businesses and that's what small businesses may be right now. Landing being able to get loans but new regulations have forced hadn't forced the banks. To be the small banks the community banks not the big banks but just -- banks to have difficulty blending. -- another. Bill that was passed No Child Left Behind the intent was mad -- regulations have just added so much money. Two local schools to stay the state government. To the federal government and the regulations are impossible to meet. We need to cut spending the states have learned this. That we need to hat -- programs. We need to cut spending and we're going to be healthier for that. But Washington DC hasn't learned that yet and there are so many programs that need to be kept -- Earmarks. They they should be a thing of the past because again. We don't have the money. We're in debt and the national government and we need to balance our budget and not put in regulations that are and needed.
All right for our next question as we continue to quotation. We can with -- part of this time. Like the question is what are we going to put more personal responsibility. In this country.
via look blocked here on the island that's an interesting question and probably quite frankly and all the debates we've had it's the first time I've heard them. A personal responsibility. I I consider something that's very maybe unusual I consider my best the family unit. And personal responsibility comes within that. You have the different -- on this gigantic flower and you can go -- education christianity. Personal responsibility. Is one of the three more important -- on this flower. Personal responsibility to be gained by several things. Turn the television on 6 o'clock. Sit that was your kids and have dinner at the same time. But the computers down but the games down quit breeding or whatever else they do an email during the dinner -- they're doing this. It's a personal responsibility starts and how it does not start at the federal level. It starts from mom and dad who starts with the unit. It starts with the you know you cannot do that. It means that you always had the teller thing they want they have to step up to the plate the sooner the better. Personal responsibility. Is something that is not handed to a person. Overnight it is something that is instilled upon them over a long period of time.
I felt have to read this is an interesting question let's go to Mike thumbnail. Mike what are we going to push for personal responsibility in this country.
So the question is when -- when -- when are we going to put her lot ought to start right now and happen. I've actually been in this fight for an awfully long time I'm not starting just this evening. We we we all understand this. When the federal government growth that creates dependency. It creates folks who turn to the federal government to solve every problem. That -- before them. And it's the wrong direction it's broad direction not only because we can't afford it and it's not sustainable. But it's also the wrong direction because it's bad for the -- we we all we all know people who are struggling there having difficult time. I know how we have tried to reach out and help them it wasn't okay lobbying for federal campaign when go find some friends in Washington DC to help them out. But it was rather to be part of -- community. Whether that was our direct assistance to them family. Whether that was being part of our church community. Those are the kinds of things we all know personal responsibility will lead to you when the federal government gets cubic. And when it begins to take care all the ills that we see before us while there's no resources left. Rush to do with the right way to do with the way that we Kansas can and we always will. And that the moment to start pushing for personal responsibly right now and you need to elect candidates who have been in that -- And so you'll have that personal responsibility to make sure you elect someone to be your next congressman. Who understands how to do that who has lived -- that himself. And who is running a campaign.
Nobody in this country. That's isn't start doing my -- but that's an interesting question and it's interesting to hear it via interpretation. Sometimes people need help in this country and we are compassionate country. And we do have programs that help people. But eventually those programs have to end.
Conscientious to be honest. And lastly it is the family -- the parents. My younger daughter who's helping in this campaign I. Has become so concerts since and so. Personally responsible. And I am very proud of her but just that it's not there. -- and she somehow has learned this through education. And through Arab and maybe her life and and at close knit family so it isn't just. Saying the that we have to do it ourselves we can have help from people we cannot help from churches are friends. And to learn -- to be a compassionate nation and they eventually help people to help themselves to be independent. To be responsible. To work for themselves to help.
Give Anderson. You go when are we going to push for personal responsibility in this well. Obviously we should have been doing now along time ago. My wife and I we've been married eighteen years we've been living their lives and we've been teaching our children. Ever since they over radio and it starts with. God that your mother and father that is where it starts. And -- we've been going down hill for decades and decades and decades and it's it's been the -- generation forever ladies and gentlemen the me generation and bigger government. Until we stop. Growing the government. In Italy take a look in the mirror at ourselves. And -- American Idol. And spend more time of their children. Spend maybe perhaps a little bit more time -- church. Electing people across the country. Ladies and gentlemen who will reduce the size of government. And I guess you have to say forced people to become responsible again. Because we rely on the government now for the most part for so many many things and it's going to be I like to tell people when I travel across the district and have counties. It's gonna be like taking people off of morphine drip. It's gonna hurt. It is gonna hurt and we have to start and it starts with mom and dad. Turn the TV off going to church perhaps a little bit more and living within our means. And not overspending ourselves in setting that example not only for our children but for our community. Around us and that has to happen ladies and gentlemen and it hasn't happened and long time and that's one of the reasons. I believe that we hear in the mess we were in week that we are and thank you. I know we. -- next.
Question to begin with Mike Pompeo Mike do you think Republican leadership is comfortable with the tradition does traditional message. Of limited government and less taxes or. You think Republicans need a new message. To keep the same core values.
Again and again the question I I'll say this. The Republican Party lost its way. For the last decade -- became. The party of big government and insider -- I can say that as someone who has been a Republican all my life and who probably got one. We need to return to that the fundamental places that are our party came from understanding that the Republican Party succeeds when it. It presents the freedom and liberty agenda the small government agenda. That's the place the Republican Party will make make it's calling and lead our country to great things. Had been I've been part of that I've I've been part of trying to bring our party back the right direction I've been very engaged. Trying to make sure that the Republican Party understood that they weren't elected to look just like liberals and to grow government. And that they were not being sent to Washington DC to be part of an establishment. That was disconnected from the things we do here in south central Kansas. I think. The party is getting hit but I think the voters are gonna make sure that we all. And as we as as as -- go around the fourth district of Kansas and and meet with folks and listen to them. Folks now. Folks know that we need to return to our traditional -- watch watch folks who go to town hall meetings and become part of keep party organizations. They get they get the simple truth. A small government less interference liberty and freedom and I think. I think you're seeing Republicans get elected all across the country on that platform. And if they do and then stay true to who they are. And things that they campaigned on. Will be a successful party and more importantly will lead our country to its to its destiny of freedom liberty and continued economic prosperity.
All right let's go to up. That he'd go to our team do you think Republican leadership is comfortable with the traditional message of limited government less taxes. Or you think Republicans need a new message to keep the same core values.
I do think the Republican Party is comfortable with small government and low taxes. But here's where maybe we differ. I believe that you try to see if there's a problem that you tried to solve the problem. It's try to come up with solutions. And Republican Party has basic principles especially foreign government I mean it not government -- for business. And it's a party of business and promoting economic development and jobs and job creation. Well. The Republican Party did lose its way and was spending a lot and Canada. Losing to the Democratic Party. And then they stopped providing those solutions. And I think that we could have solved this recession. And gotten gotten out of this recession a lot earlier. If the Republican Party had stepped forward and and used arrogant Republican. Amber -- Republican principles. To offer solutions to get out of this recession. And that's what I want to do I want to be a party of solutions and not a party of no doubt there is a place for no. But there is a bigger place for solutions. And that's what we have to do to solve problems come up with solutions. Because it's been miserable for these last two years we've got a lot more regulations -- we're going to get them. But Republicans. Do believe in smaller government. They do believe in lower taxes we've got to stop that stepped forward as a Republican Party as. As a congress person as a congressman as a senator. And work to solve problems. To get out of this mess we're in and to bring back economic recovery and --
All right let's go to give Anderson and condemn the question do you think Republican leadership is comfortable. With the traditional message of limited government and less taxes or you think Republicans need a new message to keep the same core values. Well frankly the Republican Party broken and we don't know it I mean they look what happened in 1994 ladies and gentlemen. They had the contract with the American the last maybe year -- eighteen months and now slipped back into their old suits again. -- government. Earmarks. Favors good tax code grew of the country and and what. 2000 god bless him. George Bush -- government by almost 40%. Are the Republicans comparable small and limited government. -- They art it's broken vote and it's gonna keep on going this way if we don't. Stop sending those people the Washington we're gonna perpetuate this and we're gonna be here in two years talking about it again because regions and the right people. We instant common sense people who are not part of the big Republican machine. Whoever we will and people out of the back room at a Canadian favors. And a promise of earmarks. Tax credits tax deductions and everything else. So -- the Republican Party is not comfortable with limited government. And small government they haven't you can't even tell the difference between the Democrats and the Republicans in Washington. I mean I can't. -- you folks but it I don't think it's possible. So we have to completely. Rethink who we're gonna send to Washington and that's common sense people not career politicians.
President. Also run along -- we've got when he department nick.
you think Republican leadership is comfortable with the traditional message of limited government. And less taxes or do you think Republicans need a new message to keep the same court that point. Well I I honestly believe that the career politicians do believe just that. But the second side to me is very very important what we need to consider more strongly is the Republican -- become the party of no. In my life really small businesses for over four decades. I have never originally said no across the table never accomplished anything. That also goes for the people in Washington. You're gonna -- across the table if somebody whether you believe their ideals and -- their vision. You still have to get along. You cannot insult the person across the table and expect them to join you. In the group of people to make change in Washington to go a new direction for this country in this district I have the skills. For over four decades in small business. And I have accomplished an awful lot getting people at the table to understand my vision and to follow my lead to accomplish. Creating jobs. And doing better for the community. Thank you I. He killed -- you have the Beckman and if we also -- all because of the put pending a tanker contract. What is your experience of the aircraft industry and how would you participate in those negotiations taking your.
SI said Adam. -- my ten years in the media. In the Senate and found -- into the school board I have worked to improve. To -- schools. So that we have qualified workers. And that we have also worked in the Senate to provide bonds. And programs so that we have we we started nine ER so that we have radiation resurgence. And that has become very successful and that's one of the reasons that we are. We are getting research projects and grants. Into Wichita now. We also have a new facility that I have supported the -- and cat national center for aviation training. So that we can train those aviation workers a third of the workers are going to be retiring. And we have to keep our workers here so that they will be ready to count to work when we get this tanker project. It's very important that we get this tanker project and we must support irradiation. And our aviation. Industry. I have done that my whole career win any of this industry and the aviation companies have come to the legislature we have tried to help. And when -- McCain we were able to pass a bill in thirty days to help on its. So that they could develop that -- playing now it didn't work because that's when the recession. I've dropped. The bottom out of everything but. It has been my goal to be helpful supportive and develop programs that will help our aviation industry.
All right Jim Anderson because of the pending tanker contract what is your experience in the -- that industry and how would you participate in those negotiations yet. Well it's very -- gentlemen it is really important in the fourth district if you have a representative who really understands aviation. And I -- that person I have not only flown several aircraft. All seats all on the world. I've been in management for the past 25 years of my life as well. Was in charge of the 737800. Fleet management program 525. Million dollar aircraft acquisition from the bottom up we -- that aircraft program up to the top. Those fuselage came right from this. District. I work with the vendors and work with Boeing I work -- just about everyone you can make up for every single component. Went on that piece of equipment. We negotiated what we wanted and we negotiated hard. And I'll tell you we went all the way up to and including flight test I flew those airplanes and we testament Boeing field and we brought him back. To our. Headquarters. Ladies and gentlemen you need someone who can not only. Manage the negotiations. He needs someone that can manage the pilots and crews and understand what they're going through as it relates to these aircraft as well. We work with the engineers and pilots as well and that is also crucial in this district. I know what it is like to do every single aspect. Bringing in aircraft from just parts of the pieces. To taking it in the air bringing Akira. And that's really important in this district we've lost a lot of those jobs. And if elected as your congressman. I'm gonna work tirelessly. To bring those jobs. Back to this district and you need someone with that experience ladies and gentlemen so you're gonna have to look real close this time when you select. Your congressman. -- side. And I know that I will be able to do that job for you thank you. All right -- Hartford. Because of the pending tanker contract what is your experience of the aircraft industry and how would you participate in these negotiations -- negotiate.
She's have been stalled for. Decades as well -- tanker systems we have today. Were born about the same Dallas I was Wesley hospital my work is about the only difference. The tanker program is a total embarrassment and another fine example sadly. Of what our federal government is incapable of doing. They have failed and every step of the way they have thrown up roadblocks to put in front of themselves. So the people who risked their lives daily so you and I have the freedom to sit in this very room this evening. Did not have the good inadequate equipment that they deserved. To protect this country to protect our constitution. As I've said many times and I'll say 1 more time this evening. In over four decades of running all sizes and types of small businesses I do understand what it takes to negotiate. I understand what it is to dealing good faith but I also understand how to get the job for the American families. And the people that deserve to be employed in this community.
All right thanks Mike we got -- colonial life Pompeo. Because of the pending tanker contract what is your experience in the aircraft industry and how would you participate in the negotiation.
Posits that earlier I spent ten years and -- in the industry that supports home -- and retailers and restaurants and car dealers all across. This district I grew -- company that made airplane parts I actually built the components adult every single -- part my team pulled every single -- part on 737 fuselage. I'm so I've -- that I know what it takes. Of a draft pick my work -- necessarily. We have worked hard to get the aircraft manufacturing votes to support my campaign and we've been successful. We have more contributors from the industry on our team we have more volunteers working in our office every day and the leaders of those companies assess the bombarding you Learjet. Beech craft spirit. And most recently the Boeing company.
Had they vested interest in succeeding in making sure that seven port that's that that that air refueling tanker. Gets built right here in Wichita Kansas of all joint team Pompeo proud of that. That they didn't do they didn't do it because I was from their industry they did it because they understood that I understood. They knew that I know what it takes better than any other candidate here and frankly most candidates all across the country. What it takes of the manufacturing companies can succeed. So that we can create jobs in south central Kansas and then they'll go to Washington DC and whether it's the tanker program. Or something else that their company. It's to make sure that they get their treatment -- not picking winners not favoring their business but allowing them to succeed and compete all across the country. We'll do that region.
What do you as well what would have been rough you really pleased that -- great thank you Kennedy he killed or humanity like Pompeo and a great -- completely. On the -- airport it's been alive because both headed for improvement -- which part of the city business focused and as part of their body can and will be needed. --
