Even before Tuesday's quake Cheney was struggling for those living in the poorest country in the western. -- life was already challenge now for those of us watching and from miles away.
For days voices have been heard coming from the rubble. The window for survival is closing and the chances for those still trapped being pulled out alive are dwindling. However time is also running out for those who lived through the nightmare. His aid workers scrambled to get food water and medical supplies to those so desperately in need. Over the next hour during this special edition of perspective will bring you the stories of survivors the stories of those who lost loved ones. And the responders doing all they can to help. Will reach out to our reporters on the ground in Porter prints and in the air -- what's left. We'll talk to our medical experts about the remaining chances for those buried in the debris and for those crying in need of help. But we begin with our Kate Snow in Puerto prints she takes us back to the moment the earth shook. Yeah.

Their own medical facilities severely damaged Doctors Without Borders set up trauma centers in parking lots and on lawns treating hundreds of patients many with broken bones. The Red Cross has been helping Haitians for decades but they're offices were in ruins they improvised tending to their own wounded. As well as the communities. -- entire mountainsides. That communities have come down collapsed. Outside the capital city Cindy McMartin and her husband who run a small seminary of about a hundred students. Are on their own to deal with the tragedy. Two of the buildings on their small campus collapsed trapping several of their students.

One of the first reporters to make it into the capital Port -- Prince was -- rest -- He arrived in the midst of aftershocks and it's clear from his voice he was not prepared for what he found.
This is -- dreadfully awful scene everywhere I have been around the city there are just hundreds of thousands of people on the street. Everyone is wandering aimlessly as they're afraid to get any under any type of structure whatsoever. And along the streets as I have driven. Body after body after body. -- some of them not cover. We rushed upon a couple of scenes where they were trying to pull people out of -- structure that collapsed on them these people were already at it and yet another scene. Where you can hear the voices of someone underneath the rubble even I yelled -- them -- whole ball in the hurt me and said I'm hungry young hungry. Desperate cry for help everywhere we have gone is the city in absolute chaos. This is -- city of course and a country where the crumbling infrastructure. In crumbling for years even decades but now with this. Tremendous major earthquake upon them is this city that is a tremendous need of help. We have come across this several people we have seen people. We have heard their cry we haven't been able to see them but it expand -- building that is. -- reduced from five stories and one you can hear their voices and you can hear them crying for help. And you can hear them making their desperately. And own my own. Asians are trying to rescue them and is -- much. Fruitless effort in many respects because there is no heavy equipment to help them out. Everyone seems to just be walking the street because they don't wanna get local or 1 o'clock every out. It is in and out of along. Everyone beginning to. Run wild in the street once again and there was another weird grammar. Another aftershock. Doesn't aftershock people are racing up billions right now. ABC's Aaron -- board the plane for the Dominican Republic. Landing Saturday may go into winding roads to the border the -- and eventually made it to the capital city of one of my.

It is grim and there is a sense of hopelessness on the faces of so many patients that you meet. In the streets here series many with -- else to go. Just walking aimlessly what's left of their belongings on their heads in and on their faces you get this sense of desperation. They are lacking food and water and medicine and and shelter and was nowhere else to go. They sort of filled the streets and in their past often. They encounter bodies so we have seen so many of them lying all over this city. Some art meet the lying in -- properly shrouded in white bed sheets and covered with cords. But others just -- haphazardly where the earthquake drop them. They are barely covered in rags and one wonders how soon these bodies are going to get picked up the stench. Through the city is is bearable only -- a mask and even then it's. It's it's pretty grim. You told the story of family members trying to bury some of the dead on the side of the -- are you seeing a lot of that. Syria it was so interesting when we ran into a group of men. Digging on on a hillside just enough in the bend of the road just off the side of the road that they hillside was strewn with trash. And it it certainly did not look like a cemetery but it's the only space these men could find and two families were actually fighting over the plots. There were two bodies laying right on the sidewalk one man said one of that the bodies was out of his mother. And he simply wanted to try and give her a proper burial and not let her be deposited into a mass grave.
You also told the story of what's going on at a gas station three women who were injured simply playing a piece of plywood one woman saying if you leave me here. I will die are those people getting the food and water and medical attention that they need.
They're not and and that is one of that the biggest needs here is these critically. Wounded people who have been pulled from the rubble. Thanks to -- to search and rescue efforts that are now under way. -- it does that worry is what happens to them if a search and rescue team from say Los Angeles or their facts or Miami. Pulls them out they have a better chance of getting some immediate medical attention. But in this case we saw three women get pulled out by a couple of guys from a from a house that had collapsed up the road. They were carried out on broken splintered pieces of plywood and simply plopped. And gas station parking lot and no one paid -- much attention one woman had a broken leg but there was no one around to help. And that the woman as you say -- told us that if he stayed there she she would die. There was just no one that seem to be able to. If you like you for the medical attention she clearly needed. For Americans with relatives in Haiti stories like that are chilling. The past several days have been unbearable for those who are here but whose families are there. ABC's juju Chang has more on the anguish for Haitian Americans -- slowly finding out what happened to those they love.
Watching the news -- grace love CC's two world crashed right there among the wreckage the family recognizes the home their grandfather built the once she spent her whole life saving -- when it's happened I think are I had lost everything all the pancake building used to be three stories that house fifteen members of her family. Until what did you think. IC card. Are not that day. You can add to this story. When the news finally came her Brothers and cousin made it through but two nieces and -- sister she's called virtually every day for 28 years are gone. But still some are not accounted for missing nieces and nephews -- has supported for years. Since she came to the US she's what -- a housekeeper and an overnight nurse's -- often on the clock for twenty hours a day seven days a week. She sent most of her earnings home to loved ones. Patients call their friends and relatives living in America that just for -- and they depend on them. In fact a billion dollars a year about 15% of Haiti's GM -- Comes from Haitians living in the US and other countries when you come you with a dream. And that all not only for yourself. The main staging area for humanitarian aid has been the Port -- Prince airport and delivering all the supplies necessary for the survivors has been difficult at best. At first they were too many planes on the tarmac then they were leaving without being fully loaded. ABC's -- got a look at the destruction in order prints from the air in the early days of the relief mission.
As we took off there were at least half a dozen planes and helicopters. Waited to take off behind us some of them carried it only if -- 200 pounds to get it. -- How little. These aid effort has been so Clark getting needed supplies through.
